Welding Gloves and Work Clothing in Ireland: What to Wear Before You Strike an Arc

Most welders will spend real money on a machine and a decent helmet, then grab whatever gloves are lying in the van. It’s backwards. A cheap glove fails slowly and quietly, with a scorched fingertip here and a burnt seam there, and by the time you notice, the skin has already paid for it.

This guide covers welding gloves and welding work clothing the way people actually weld in Ireland: damp sheds, farm yards, cold workshops, and the odd job on a wet site. It sorts out what the safety standards mean, which kit suits which process, and where buyers go wrong.

Start With the Gloves

Your hands sit closest to the heat, so they take the worst of it. Check two things on the label before anything else. The first is the EN 12477 mark, the standard written specifically for welders’ gloves. The second is a letter, A or B.

Type A or Type B?

Type A gloves give more heat and spatter protection and feel stiffer. Type B gives up some of that protection in return for dexterity. The standard points TIG welders towards Type B and everyone else towards Type A, which makes sense once you think about how each process behaves.

Process	Glove type	What to look for
MIG / MAG	Type A	Thick split leather, long cuff, aramid stitching
Stick (MMA)	Type A	Lined palm, reinforced thumb, 14-inch cuff or longer
TIG	Type B	Thin goat or kid leather, straight thumb, good fingertip feel
Plasma cutting	Type A	Heavy leather and a long cuff for sparks and dross

A TIG glove on a stick job wears through fast. A heavy MIG gauntlet on a TIG job makes feeding filler rod miserable. Welders who switch processes during the week often end up owning both, and that costs less than replacing the wrong pair over and over.

Stitching, Lining and Cuff Length

Ordinary thread burns before leather does, so decent welding gloves use Kevlar or another aramid thread on the seams. When cheap stitching lets go, the glove comes apart in your hand. A cotton lining helps as well, since cotton chars instead of melting if a hot spark finds its way inside.

Cuff length matters more than most people expect. A 14-inch gauntlet covers the wrist and a good stretch of forearm, which is exactly where spatter lands during overhead work or in a tight corner. The Grey Reinforced Welding Gloves are a plain example: 14-inch cuff, reinforced palm, Kevlar stitching, no fuss.

One limit worth knowing. Welding gloves handle brief contact with hot metal, not carrying a freshly welded bracket across the yard. Use pliers.

Getting the Size Right

A glove that’s too big wrinkles at the fingertips and slips on the torch trigger. Too tight and the seams strain, and your hand tires well before the job is done. Try them on with whatever liner you wear in winter, because winters here are long.

Keep Them Separate From General Work Gloves

A welding gauntlet is a poor partner for an angle grinder, and a standard rigger glove has no business near an arc. For grinding, cutting, and general handling, keep a separate pair from the work gloves range. The gloves and gauntlets section shows everything side by side if you’d rather compare them in one place.

Welding Work Clothing That Does Its Job

Gloves get the attention, but sparks don’t stop at the wrist. Clothing is where most burns happen, mostly on forearms and thighs.

Class 1 or Class 2?

EN ISO 11611 is the standard for welders’ clothing, and it has two classes. Class 1 suits lighter work with little spatter, such as TIG and gas welding. Class 2 is built for heavier spatter and more radiant heat, which covers stick, MAG, flux-cored welding and plasma cutting. If you’re unsure, buy Class 2. The extra weight is a small price.

Fabric, Fit and the Small Details

Synthetics are the enemy. Polyester and nylon melt onto skin, and a small burn becomes a bad one. That goes for what you wear underneath too, because a synthetic base layer melts just as readily as a jacket. Flame-retardant cotton or leather is the safe choice, and the fire retardant range is the place to start.

Then the details that never show up on a product page. Trousers should have no turn-ups, because a cuff catches a spark and holds it. Pocket flaps stay closed. Collars stay fastened. The trouser legs go outside the boots so nothing drops in.

A boiler suit leaves fewer gaps, which helps with overhead or pipe work. A two-piece is easier to get out of on a warm afternoon. Either does the job if it carries the right marking, and the full work clothing range covers both.

Dressing for Irish Conditions

Our weather changes the maths. A farm repair in January is cold enough that you’ll want a cotton or wool layer under the suit and never fleece. In a closed workshop in August, heavy Class 2 leather can feel like a sauna, so plenty of welders keep a lighter cotton set for TIG and thin-sheet work.

Feet, Head and the Work Area

Spatter loves boots. Welders boots or good safety footwear with a smooth upper and no exposed laces are worth paying for. A welding hat keeps sparks off your scalp and slips under a helmet, and your welding helmet does the rest. Around the job itself, a welding blanket shields anything flammable nearby.

Looking After Your Kit

Grease and oil are fuel. Flame-retardant clothing soaked in either loses a lot of its protection, so wash it by the label and retire it once it’s thin, scorched, or full of patches. Some flame-retardant treatments wash out over time, and others are woven into the fibre, so find out which one you’ve got.

Dry gloves away from heaters. Leather baked dry goes hard and cracks. Wet leather is no better, since it passes heat to your skin faster. Give them a quick look before each shift: thinning fingertips, opening seams and shiny hard patches all mean replacement.

If you employ anyone who welds, the duty to supply suitable PPE under Irish safety law is yours, not theirs. The Health and Safety Authority publishes guidance if you want the detail.

Summary

Match the glove to the process: Type A for MIG, stick, and cutting, Type B for TIG. Look for aramid stitching and a proper cuff. Choose Class 1 or Class 2 clothing by how much spatter you throw, and keep synthetics off your body completely. Boots and a hat finish the setup.
