Most people who complain about their metal bandsaw don't actually have a problem with the machine. They have a problem with the blade — wrong tooth count, wrong tooth style, running at the wrong speed for the material sitting in the vice. A decent bandsaw with the wrong blade will cut worse than a cheaper one set up properly, and that gap trips up more workshops than any spec sheet comparison ever will.

Horizontal, Vertical, or Both

Horizontal Bandsaws

The standard choice for straight cut-off work is tube, box section, solid bar, or angle iron. The blade sits horizontal and lowers down through the material clamped in a vice below it. If most of your work is cutting stock to length, this is the machine you want, and it's what most fabrication shops and farm workshops run as their main saw.

Vertical Bandsaws

The blade runs vertically, and the material gets guided through it by hand, which allows curved and contour cuts that a horizontal saw simply can't do. Less common in general fabrication, more common in metalwork that involves shaping rather than just cutting to length — brackets, templates, irregular profiles.

Combination Machines

Some bandsaws convert between horizontal and vertical operation, giving you both capabilities in one machine. Handy for a smaller workshop that doesn't have room or budget for two separate saws, though a dedicated machine of either type will usually outperform a combo unit doing the same specific job.

Manual, Semi-Automatic, or Automatic Feed

This decides how much of the cutting process you're actively managing versus how much the machine handles on its own.

Manual, gravity-feed saws rely on the weight of the head (sometimes assisted by a hydraulic damper) to lower the blade through the material, with you controlling the pace by hand. Fine for low-volume or occasional work.

Semi-automatic machines lower and raise the blade automatically once you've clamped the material, cutting one piece and stopping, ready for the next. This suits a workshop doing regular, repeated cutting without needing full production-line output.

Fully automatic saws handle feeding, clamping, and cutting with minimal operator input, built for repeat production runs rather than occasional workshop use. Most trade and farm workshops in Ireland have no real need for this level of automation — it's aimed at higher-volume fabrication and manufacturing environments.

Blade Selection: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong

Once the machine is sorted, the blade is what actually determines cut quality, speed, and how long you'll go before needing a replacement.

Teeth Per Inch (TPI)

TPI is the single biggest factor in blade selection, and the rule is simple even if it's widely ignored: keep at least three teeth in contact with the material at all times. Too few teeth engaged, and the blade snags or strips teeth on the edge of the material. Too many teeth for a thick section slows the cut and generates excess heat without any benefit.

Tooth Set

Wavy-set blades group small teeth alternating left and right, good for thin sections, tubes, and small profiles where a standard tooth pattern would snag. Alternate set blades (one tooth left, one right, no raker pattern) suit general-purpose cutting of solid material. Getting this wrong shows up as chatter, premature tooth wear, or a rough, torn cut edge rather than a clean line.

Blade Material

Bi-metal blades — a hardened steel edge welded to a flexible carbon steel body — are the standard choice for most workshops, balancing durability with the flexibility needed to run around the saw's wheels without cracking. Carbide-tipped blades last considerably longer on hard or abrasive materials, at a higher upfront cost, and make sense mainly for high-volume or particularly demanding cutting rather than general workshop use.

Blade Speed and Coolant

Cutting speed needs to match the material — softer metals like aluminium generally want faster blade speeds, while harder alloys and stainless steel need it slowed right down, or the blade overheats fast, dulling teeth well before their expected life. Most saws offer either a fixed range of speeds or variable speed control; check which your intended machine offers against the range of materials you'll actually be cutting.

Coolant isn't just about lubrication. It carries heat away from the blade and the workpiece, which extends blade life considerably and improves cut finish. Dry-cutting a bandsaw that's meant to run with coolant, just to skip the mess, is one of the fastest ways to burn through blades faster than expected.

Common Mistakes

Running one blade for every job regardless of material thickness, then blaming the machine when a thin tube gets chewed up by a coarse blade meant for a solid bar.

Ignoring vibration or chatter as "just how the saw sounds" when it's usually a sign of the wrong TPI for the material or a blade that's due for replacement.

Skipping coolant to avoid the cleanup, then wondering why blades that should last months are dulling within weeks.

Wrapping It Up

The saw gets you most of the way there, but the blade decides whether a cut is clean, fast, and doesn't chew through consumables unnecessarily. Match TPI to your actual material thickness, pick tooth set and blade material for what you cut most, and don't skip coolant to save time — it costs you more in blades than it saves in cleanup.
