Soil Contamination from Oil: Causes, Signs and Treatment in Ireland

Soil contamination can be difficult to spot.

You might see a dark patch around an oil tank. There may be an unusual smell near a shed or garage. Grass might stop growing properly in one area. Sometimes, though, there are no obvious signs at all.

What Causes Soil Contamination?

Soil can become contaminated in several ways.

Dark or stained soil

Oil-contaminated soil may have an unusual colour or appearance compared with surrounding ground.

Poor vegetation growth

Plants or grass struggling in a localised area can sometimes indicate a problem with the underlying soil, although there can be many other causes.

Oil around a tank or pipe

Staining underneath an oil tank or around pipework should always be investigated.

An unexplained loss of fuel

If an oil tank is losing fuel faster than expected, there may be a leak somewhere in the system.

Evidence of an old spill

Old staining, buried containers or a history of industrial or commercial use can all be relevant when assessing a site.

One sign alone does not prove soil contamination. It is the combination of site history, physical evidence and testing that provides a clearer picture.

Can You Tell If Soil Is Contaminated Just by Looking at It?

No.

Visual inspection is useful, but it has limits.

Clean-looking soil can still contain hydrocarbons. Conversely, soil that looks dark or smells unusual may have another explanation.

Where contamination is suspected, samples may need to be taken and sent for laboratory analysis.

This can establish what contaminants are present and help determine their concentration.

Oil Spill Ireland, for example, describes taking soil samples for chemical analysis following oil spills and using the results to determine whether contaminated soil needs excavation and removal or whether it can remain in place following assessment.

That evidence is far more useful than simply guessing from the appearance of the ground.

How Is Soil Contamination Investigated?

The investigation depends on the site and the suspected source.

A typical assessment may involve:

Inspecting the affected area.
Establishing the source of the contamination.

Identifying possible pathways through the ground.

Removing hundreds of tonnes of soil unnecessarily is very different from treating a defined area in place.

Does Contaminated Soil Always Have to Be Dug Up?

No.

Excavation is one option, but it is not automatically the answer.

If contamination is severe, concentrated or located in an area where removal is practical, excavation may be appropriate.

In other situations, in-situ treatment may be considered.

The EPA's contaminated-land approach is risk-based and involves assessing the site before selecting and designing corrective action.

That matters because every site has different conditions.

A contaminated garden beside a house is not the same as a large industrial yard. A shallow spill is different from contamination that extends several metres into the ground.

Excavation and Removal of Contaminated Soil

Where excavation is appropriate, contaminated soil is removed from the affected area.

Bioremediation is another option for certain oil-contaminated sites.

The process uses biological activity to break down hydrocarbons in the soil.

Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi can naturally degrade certain petroleum-based contaminants. Where site conditions are suitable, remediation can be encouraged so that contamination is reduced without removing all of the affected soil.

What About Groundwater?

Soil contamination and groundwater contamination can be closely connected.

If oil travels deep enough into the ground, it may reach groundwater.

That creates another potential pathway for pollution to move away from the original source.

The EPA identifies chemical spills and leakage as potential sources of groundwater pollution and notes that groundwater supports rivers, lakes, wetlands and estuaries.

Groundwater should therefore be considered where:

Contamination is deep
The water table is shallow
A private well is nearby
A stream or watercourse is close to the site
A large quantity of oil has been released
Underground contamination has been present for a long time

A soil cleanup that ignores a confirmed groundwater problem may leave part of the contamination untreated.

Soil Contamination Around an Oil Tank

Domestic oil tanks are a common concern.

A tank may develop a crack, corrosion or a problem with its fittings. Pipework can also deteriorate.

The earlier the leak is found, the easier it is to control the source.

If you notice oil staining around your tank, do not simply cover it with fresh gravel or soil.

The source should be checked first.

If the ground has been contaminated, replacing the tank alone may not resolve the environmental problem.

What Happens to Removed Contaminated Soil?

If contaminated soil is excavated, it needs to be managed appropriately.

It cannot simply be moved to another part of the property.

Excavation may be appropriate in one situation, while bioremediation or another treatment may make more sense in another.

Soil Contamination Should Be Investigated, Not Guessed

A patch of stained soil may be the visible part of the problem.

It may also be the only affected area.

You cannot know without looking at the site properly.

That is why soil investigation and laboratory testing are important before deciding what happens next. Once the contamination is understood, the available remediation options become much clearer.

For some sites, excavation will be the practical answer. For others, treating the soil in place can reduce unnecessary disruption and waste.
